Rolex Submariner 'Hulk' Ref. 116610LV
Launched in 2010 and discontinued in 2020 with the launch of the next generation of Submariners, few watches among Rolex’s many famous references gained as much modern notoriety as the iconic “Hulk” ref. 116610LV. With its sturdy 40mm steel case, bright ceramic bezel insert, and matching verdant dial, few nicknames came as easily - the green monster at its debut becoming an instant hit among enthusiasts and helping define an entire generations of Submariners.
Why we love it remains much of the same as why collectors in the mid-2010s did. With an iconic design that builds on more than half a century of Submariner history, the “Hulk” is one of the most striking references Rolex has produced to-date. Take these looks and bolster them with the ever-reliable Rolex caliber 3135, a ready-for-anything 40mm by 12.5mm 904L-grade Oystersteel case, and highly legible Maxi dial, and you have a timepiece more than ready for smashing time (though we do highly recommend you do not, in fact, smash your watch).
This particular Rolex Submariner, the ref. 16610LV “Hulk,” designates one of the brand’s newer models, produced in the 2010s. The ref. 116610LV builds on the popular ref. 16610 with the upgraded features you'd expect of a modern Rolex, including a proprietary Chromalight luminescent material, non-drilled lugs, and a ceramic bezel insert - the LV in its name standing for Lunette Verte, or green bezel when translated from French.
This example is in overall excellent pre-owned condition, meaning there are very light signs of wear and some small scratches on the case and bracelet that come with being lived with. The case is strong and has been professionally refinished. The dial and bezel are stunning. The bracelet is tight with little stretch between the links. There are a few very faint scratches on the caseback and rear of the lugs. The inner rehaut is engraved beneath the six o'clock marker with the serial number "182C3XXX." During our quality control check, any necessary adjustments are made to ensure the watch is functioning as intended.
In 1905, a watchmaker named Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis set up shop as Wilsdorf and Davis in London. In 1908, this company would officially register the name Rolex, and by 1915, they had relocated the brand to Switzerland, where the headquarters remain to this day. Rolex has notched countless firsts in watchmaking, such as the chronometer-certified wristwatch and the first cased wristwatch with water resistance up to 100 meters. The brand also became a ubiquitous force in our culture on the wrist of countless celebrities and as the official timekeeper of numerous sporting events.
