Grand Seiko Automatic GMT SBGM009
Astute watch collectors have long looked to Grand Seiko for quality mechanical watches prized for their precision, decoration, and value. The Japanese company's commitment to its craft is clear through the consistent high level of quality in fit and finish in every watch it creates, without exception.
And one of our absolute favorites from the brand continues to be its series of automatic GMTS. We even modeled our first collaborative limited edition with Grand Seiko – the SBGM239 – on this line of watches.
This specific Grand Seiko GMT is from the model's inaugural selection, which dates back to 2002 when the 9S56 caliber was first introduced. This was Grand Seiko's first-ever GMT movement, and they paired it with a clean, uncomplicated design language that toes the line between dressy and casual. You'll notice the dial of this watch features both the Seiko and Grand Seiko branding, a standard attribute found on all Grand Seiko watches prior to 2017.
This GMT model features the in-house 9S56 movement, an automatic caliber that delivers the time in two locations simultaneously. The model shown here comes with a stainless steel case, a black dial, and vibrant red hand that indicates the time on a 24-hour scale. Grand Seiko updated its in-house GMT movement from the 9S56 to the 9S66 in 2010. Another difference between this GMT and the current production SBGM221 is a closed stainless steel caseback on the former. The bracelet found on this Automatic GMT is identical to the one used on the Grand Seiko Automatic GMT SBGM239 Limited Edition for fashiontourbillon.com, released in 2020.
This Grand Seiko Automatic GMT is in overall excellent pre-owned condition, which indicates that there are signs of very light wear, possibly some small scratches on the case and bracelet. There are no significant flaws to note; the case and dial are both clean. The engravings on the caseback are crisp. The case has been professionally refinished. During our quality control check, any necessary adjustments are made to ensure the watch is functioning as intended. This watch is accompanied by its original Grand Seiko box, papers dated February 23, 2009, and manuals. Please note the papers are Japanese and the previous owner's information has been cut out. The outer box also shows some signs of wear.
The Japanese brand Grand Seiko released its first watch in 1960, challenging the perception that the Swiss were the undisputed masters of fine watchmaking. In the nearly 60 years since the first Grand Seiko, the company has built a reputation worldwide for producing some of the most elegantly designed timepieces while developing innovative technologies, such as Spring Drive. Even while maintaining its high quality standards, Grand Seiko delivers tons of value in its watches, making it popular with collectors at all levels. In 2017, Grand Seiko became its own brand within Seiko's expansive watchmaking portfolio.
